Community Survey Responses

Thank you so much to those of you who participated in our 2023 Community Survey. We received wonderful feedback and are continuing to compile the data to assist with our Strategic Planning process and have already put in place some of your suggestions.

Because the survey was anonymous and we received suggestions for many things we already do, we wanted to put together this list of responses to suggestions for things we already have in place to share!

Suggestion:

Start a Gardening Club

Response:

We have a Gardening Club that meets regularly. Please contact Margaret Novak at mnovak@homewoodlibrary.org if you are interested in joining.

Suggestion:

Do Outside Story Times

Response:

Weather permitting, we do outside story times in various Homewood parks and at the Homewood Farmer’s Market regularly. Please check our events calendar for more details during warm weather months.

Suggestion:

Have an “Event” Book Sale

Response:

The Friends of the Homewood Library handles all book sales. Over the past several years they have had at least three outdoor sales of significance in the months of June, July and August. They also have an ongoing book sale all of the hours the library is open, in the upstairs western mezzanine area.

Suggestion:

Get a Music Product like Freegal

Response:

At this time we subscribe to Hoopla, which is a streaming service for HPL cardholders that provides access to music, movies, e-books, audiobooks and more. HPL cardholders can connect to Hoopla at www.hoopladigital.com.

Suggestion:

Start a Video Game Club like Orland Park

Response:

Great suggestion! HPL has a two video game clubs that meet regularly. One club is for teens and meets regularly in the FORT. The second club is for ages 8-12 and meets monthly in the meeting room. Please check the event calendar for times and details.

Suggestion:

Makery Time for Seniors

Response:

All use of the Makery, with the exception of occasional class offerings, is by appointment only. So, anyone can set up a one on one appointment with Makery staff to use, or learn about, the equipment in the space. That said, perhaps a one off introductory class should be offered. Thanks for the suggestion! Please reach out to Makery staff at makery@homewoodlibrary.org

Suggestion:

Offer Senior Trips

Response:

We are happy to say that with the assistance of an Age Options grant to help offset the substantial cost of such ventures, we have offered a number of trips for seniors, to places like the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum. We hope to increase these offerings and expand them in the future!

Additionally, the following were also suggestions made for services, etc. that we already have in place in one way or another:

  • Copies of textbooks and workbooks for each school
  • Better copies of books. Nice displays with newer series.
  • Resources available to support school curriculum and to help keep children interested in reading
  • School supplies
  • Screenfree Week fun
  • Collaboration with schools, library field trips, and visiting classrooms
  • Visiting preschools for story time
  • Story hours
  • After school activities and programs, like Chess Club
  • Tutoring services (through the schools)
  • Partnering with school libraries
  • Dedicated space for children
  • Opportunities to connect kids ages 7-10
  • Craft kits
  • Video game night for younger kids
  • Books lists and outreach
  • Promote library cards and volunteer opportunities
  • More Homeschool Club activities
  • Keep banned books on our shelves

If you have questions about anything listed here feel free to contact the appropriate library staff for more information, listed on our Meet Our Staff page.
